Voting

I don't need to remind you to do it.

I do just want to take a minute to complain that I woke up this morning, delirious with illness, but super excited to vote nonetheless. Instead I had to wait until about 4pm when I finally recieved the glorious email that allowed me to do the one thing I wanted to do today other than sleep.

Additionally, I'd just like to apologize to anyone following this blog but school/my current sickness have really been a detriment to my ability to keep this blog as well as I'd like to. That being said I wish all the candidates the best of luck over the next couple days. I anticipate the results.

Candidate profiles

What can we learn from them? There were a lot to read and I don't blame you if you didn't so I'll try and do a little summary for you.

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
The Shuttle buses were the most oft quoted example here. The university's sustainable development team was also mentioned a fair number of times.
3.What is the largest problem on campus?
Student space was a big one here, many candidates mentioned that the bus strike brought this to the attention of many people. Additionally campus unity (in various forms) was mentioned as a large issue. Student power, tuition fees, and class sizes were all mentioned here as well.

According to the candidates these are the most important issues. Are they the issues that will decide your vote? Are student politicians in touch with all students?

The Federators?

In the interest of digging deep down into issues that affect students I've had to wonder: "What could next year's 101 week supergroup look like?"
Well see what the SFUO exec candidates had to say for themselves.

Here's what I wanted to know:
1. What position will you be taking in the band?
2. What song would you most like to perform?
3. What is your best stage move?
4. The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?

VP Finance
Maureen Hasinoff
1. I'd totally be the front singer!
2. I would probably perform either We will rock you or dancing queen
3. Doing the jive
4. The Beatles

Roxanne Dubois
1. I can dance! But signing is more likely!
2. Milord by Edith Piaf, why not!
3. Air guitar, or something of the likes!
4. Beatles!

VP Student Affairs
Michèle Lamarche
1.I have learned to play a lot of different instruments (flute, guitar, drums, xylophone, etc), but I have a disability that affects my hands which would probably affect the quality of the band. I guess I will have to sing…?
2. My favourite song is 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' by Starship, but I have a feeling no one will get it seeing as how I am one of the few possible exec members who can actually remember the 80s, ha. I am thinking of singing 'I am Just a Girl' by No Doubt and maybe changing up the words to connect it to the SFUO, UOttawa and 101 Week. We shall see.
3.Hmmm… well if you ask my Arts Exec, they will tell you that I like to dance with swords… ;)
4.The Beatles.

VP University Affairs
Jeremy Stuart
1. Bass. No one wants to be bass, but I'm nerdy enough to qualify (I also love playing it)
2. "Hey, Hey, What can I do?" by Led Zeppelin
3. My best move is walking off the stage. The crowd really responds to that one!
4. The Beatles were crushed by the Rolling Stones!

Ted Horton
1. Lead Saxophonist / Backup Vocals
2. Your English is Good - Tokyo Police Club
3. Air Harpsichord
4. The Beatles

President
Seamus Wolfe
1. I will spend a little time a possible on stage - I am not the world's best singer
2. Haven't even thought of it, this year I did Fortunate Son by the Credence Clearwater Revival and it went well. I think I'll go down a similar road next year.
3. Not sounding terrible.
4. The Beatles for sure!

Renaud Philippe Garner
1. Pianist
2. Anything by Chopin
3. Setting the Piano on fire.
4. Pink Floyd.

To summarize: It looks like almost regardless, the Federators will have many singers next year. Does that mean we'll have Crosby Stills Nash and Young style harmonies? One can only hope. Additionally, almost everyone picked the Beatles except Renaud who picked Pink Floyd, and Jeremy who picked the Stones. I'll give Jeremy points for being different. Also, just on a personal note, I think the VP University Affairs candidates have the best taste in music.

All other candidates were emailed but their reponses were not recieved. Poor showing from the VP social candidates in my opinion.

Jeremy Stuart Update

Jeremy has updated his site with a series of videos (in English only). The website looks good, the videos are low quality but a nice way to communicate. Check it out here.

Iain Brannigan (BOA SocSci)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
My name is Iain Brannigan and I am running for BOA (Social Sciences). My platform in one sentence is - supporting student empowerment while educating and encouraging more respect to our environment.
2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
One thing the admin is doing right is the shuttle service they supplied during the bus strike.
3.What is the largest problem on campus?
One of the largest problems on campus is the lack of respect for the environment (or student apathy in general).
4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I will stick to my ideals and cut the massive surplus of rhetoric that plagues politics. I will also bring pita and hummus.
5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
If I came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in my office - I would congratulate my dealer for having some good shiz.

Tyler Steeves, Amy Kishek. What are they up to?

Well I saw Tyler Steeves at Subway today, working the excruciatingly long lineup. I didn't have a chance to speak with him since I was just on my way out when he arrived but he certainly has a charismatic personality.

However, I keep seeing his posters in groups of 3 which I think is a little much. How frequently are 3 people trying to look at the same poster at the same time in the same exact space?

Amy Kishek was in the University Centre today, she had a table set up and stuff. I was trying to get to class but she looked pretty happy so I'll assume things were going well? Maybe Amy can clarify? Her facebook status says she has fruits and cookies.

The last day before voting

And this blogger has fallen unpleasantly ill. It's quite unfortunate, but I'll mention what was seen during my time out in the world today while my neocitran cools off.

TBT 333- 1pm
Lots of presentations so they were saddled with a 1 minute deadline by the professor who had his timer ready to go. Who spoke?
Mike Fancie- Pointed out that part time students can't vote for Senate or BOG. Said he'd like to change that. Also wants Student Appeal time shortened. The points are fair, although judging by his survey of the room they aren't particularly relevant to most of the students there. He should aim towards issues that affect all students in ways they can appreciate.

Roxanne Dubois- Roxanne's approach to the 1 minute limit wasn't pick your battles, it was speak faster. Which can make things a little difficult. She is the only one I remember writing on the chalkboard though, and she was polite, staying until the end of all presentations and thanking the professor. Mentioned consultative budgets again etc.

Michèle Lamarche- Essentially asked people to vote yes for her, and explained the e-voting a little bit.

Maureen Hasinoff- I only saw Maureen speak in the debates before where she seemed uncomfortable. Today it definitely seemed as though Maureen had more support. She pushed for the kitchen in 1848 again and using Chartwell's as a target seems to work to her advantage. Additionally she spoke of the budget being posted online. She stuck to a few key points which I thought worked well.

Peter Flynn- Peter took the minimalist approach to a new level today. He basically said "Peter Flynn, tomorrow, wednesday, thursday online, BOA, responsibility, integrity, and transparency." And he was done. People seemed to support that. Or the fact that it was so short. Who knows.

Hey Seamus! speaking of "NO!" campaigns...

Millennium Villages

None other than current VP social Joël Larose has translated his letter to the Fulcrum on the subject into an actual campaign. There has been a heated discussion on the elections homepage, as well as in the Fulcrum and now it seems to be coming to a head. I think there's little doubt that this is the most controversial of all the referendums this year and the debate seems to be heating up rather than cooling down.

More videos from Dominic Villeneuve

I like Dominic Villeneuve for two reasons. One, I've met him a couple times now and he's a really approachable guy, which is a good quality for anyone seeking to win a representative position. Two, he always lets me know when he's putting new videos up, which saves me some trouble of checking his site. Anyway, here's the new one (the English one which I think is clever, and the French one which shows off his singing ability)

Another update from Model Parliament

So Model Parliament today saw some highs and lows. And some candidates were there too!

I think everyone who was previously mentioned as being there was there again. Aminka Belvitt who's running for BOA was there as well. And what happened:
Peter Flynn DID table documents attesting to his high economics grades. If that doesn't sway anyone's votes one way or another, he did start spinning his arm in the air and bouncing around like a rodeo clown during 2nd reading of a bill. He also has a firm handshake.
Iain Brannigan was there, he talked about how if he was on the BOA he'd like to see more recycling initiatives as well as things about student power. the $35 fee to split tuition payments came up as well and he's certainly targeted that. He also promises me the answers to my questions will finally be arriving in my inbox soon.
Cam Gray (for BOA) was there as well. A few things not really BOA related: he likes his pizza, he hates e-coli, and it's hard to say he's not a nice guy.

Being the, I assume, most political student association on campus means that political debate is fairly likely to occur. Here is what people were saying in a segment I'd like to call...

Word On the Street
There appears to be an anti-Seamus sentiment amongst students; one campaign volunteer who shall remain anonymous said he/she would drop his/her candidate's campaign in order to run a "No to Seamus campaign."
No clear alternative is being proposed either. Some say Steeves but mention his poor debate performance as an obstacle. Others say Renaud is "idealistic." And not neccessarily in a good way.

Marc Kelly was immediately rejected as a viable candidate.

Update from the Fancie Camp

I have what I am told is exclusive information from the Mike Fancie campaign. Look out for an update from him on empowering students and campaign funding on Monday. Additionally, he has informed me that he has removed a banner from Tabaret in response to Kyle Simunovic's loss of a banner which according to Kyle's website occurred on Thursday.

Fancie says: "I want this campaign to be equitable and just, so in sympathy I felt it was the right thing to do."

More to come on Mike Fancie's run for Senate as it develops.

Maureen Hasinoff (VP Finance)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
My name is Maureen Hasinoff and I am running for the position of V.P. finance. My platform is based on changing the current system that is in place so that students are effectively represented and have a voice in the SFUO.
2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
I think that the bus service that was provided for the students was one of the most effective and used campaigns by the University Administration, it really was there to meet the needs of students when they were literally stranded.
3.What is the largest problem on campus?
I think the largest problem on our campus is the lack of student space. Students need space to study, to hang out, to meet and we really do need to improve on the amount of space we have on campus. We need to make sure were utilizing our space effectively to meet the needs of students.
4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I bring a fresh perspective of someone who is determined, self-suffient and who has the experiance in finances. I bring new ideas and new plans that reflect students and what they need out of their student federation.
5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
I would take it home with me, i've always wanted a pet elephant.

Election news?

Ok, so I spent the majority of my evening at model parliament. Several candidates are taking part:
Peter Flynn (BOA SocSci)
Iain Brannigan (BOA SocSci)
Cam Gray (BOA SocSci)
Ivy O (BOA SocSci)
Austin Menyasz (BOG)
Kyle Simunovic (BOA SocSci and Senate)

What did I learn? Not much, it's been busy in the Senate but I can tell you that:
Peter Flynn is willing to table evidence that he passed 2 first year economics courses (with A+'s!)
Iain will act in unparliamentary manners (and be forced to apologize for them).
Austin Menyasz is hungry after a night in the Senate. That and he appreciates that this new round of politics is a break from the other politics.
Kyle Simunovic makes member's statements about fictional old ladies who make wonderful jam in the BC riding of: West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country (which is the most ridiculous riding title of all time.)

I'll see what I can dig up tomorrow.

Roxanne Dubois (VP Finance)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
Roxanne Dubois, VP Finance, Ensuring a responsible management of the SFUO's ressources while reinforcing our strong social engagement.

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
Diffusing the projects we have been trying to push forward with them!

3.What is the largest problem on campus?
Commercialisation: unclear criteria for the selling off of different parts of campus (buildings, student spaces, buildings).

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I bring a vision for the position of VP finance that is looking further than the actual numbers: making sure we keep a strong social engagement through our initiatives and budget priorities.

5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
I would talk about it! (the elephant in the room...get it? :p )

(Roxanne's elephant response made me lol)

Sarah Jayne King (BOA SocSci)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
Sarah Jayne King for BOA Social Sciences. I am running for students - strong voices, food security, equity, health and sustainability, and anti-oppression.
2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
The University of Ottawa administration is doing a good job of keeping students out of the loop in important matters (or seeking tokenistic input) like the Senate recording policy. But on a truly positive note, our Sustainable Development team is pretty awesome.
3.What is the largest problem on campus?
The largest problem on campus is the lack of student space. There is far too much corporate interest on campus, and not enough space for students to study, eat, and socialize.
4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I can bring a great deal of experience having sit on other boards (like OPIRGs) in the past. I am a person with strong convictions who is willing to listen and understand the needs of others.
5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
If the elephant was Austin Menyasz, I would ask him to kindly leave if had nothing constructive to offer. If the elephant was kind, I would offer her some water.

(I would like to say that I've found this one of the most entertaining sets of responses yet. She gave both a sarcastic and real response to the administration question, which is interesting. Additionally, she took a shot at Austin, and who doesn't love some election excitement?)

A Quick Update

Today will be a slow blog day. I've got work to do, I have things around my apartment to do and I'm preparing for model parliament which starts tonight, and I'm barely on campus today. So, sorry.

There are other excellent blogs running as well if you're in dire need of news. I will continue posting questionnaires as I receive them from candidates running for all sorts of positions, if you never received a questionnaire let me know how I can email it to you, or just send me the answers to the questions you see everyone else answering: uoelection09@live.ca

Additionally, I have a couple projects I think are interesting in the works and they will be announced as soon as I can do so with some certainty as to their success. Lastly, look forward to some referendum info being posted here soonish (and if you're on a referendum committee, feel free to email me! You can get some space up here too!)

I'll probably post later on tonight, although who knows what kind of things I'll have to post.

ps. Does anyone know all the posting rules? Because I saw a certain high profile candidate had 3 posters grouped together? Is this allowed. (Morrisset stairwell if you're interested)

Stephanie Marentette (BOA SocSci)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
Stephanie Marentette, BOA Social SciencesPlatform in one sentence: The BOA has a serious visibility problem that I hope to change so that more students in my faculty become aware of things going on on campus and who they can talk to if they have questions or things they would like to see happen on campus.

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
I think that the Univeristy Administration is decently able to adapt to bizarre situations such as the bus strike. Providing shuttles and having the President of the university offer up his own residence to try and encourage people to let students stay in their homes until the strike was over was a good effort. Some people may not have been helped by this or felt that it was good enough, but at least something was done to try and help students get to class. I also like how involved Allen Rock is in running the university. By doing things such as staying in a student residence to be able to better understand how it feels to be a first year and to offer up his home proves that he cares about the university and the students who go here. Having the univeristy function the way it is supposed to depends on good leadership at the top, which we are very
fortunate to have.

3.What is the largest problem on campus?
The largest problem on campus is the fact that in order to get anything done, there is this huge and complicated process that seems to change on a rotating basis which I feel is a real deterrence to student groups on campus. I personally have experienced this myself through trying to speak
to people on campus about UNICEF events that the club has tried to launch. There was one time where I spoke with person A, who then told me to talk to person B. Person B then referred me back to person A, who then said talk to person C. Person C then sent me to person D, and this continued for about a week. That is absolutely ridiculous and I feel that student clubs and groups with really valuable ideas and events to offer to students do not achieve anywhere near as much as they could if they had a bit more support and that support was effective.

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I can bring to the table my experience and my approachability. Everyone running for the BOA has really great ideas that they want to see implemented, which I do as well. But what separates me is that I will take into consideration not just my ideas, but those of the students I represent, and I will achieve the best possible result for our faculty through my ability to work with others. It doesn't do anybody any good if the person representing them only pushes their own agenda and is not able to effectively work with the other members of the board.

5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
I would be pretty excited since I've always wanted a pet elephant :)

Martin Schoots-McAlpine (BOA Arts)

1. 1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
My name is Martin Schoots-McAlpine, I'm running for the BOA-Arts, and to sum up my platform in a short phrase (one better than a sentence!): student power.

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
The administration is setting up a committee to try and improve the "student experience". Bare in mind that they hand-pick who will sit on said committee, the lack of a democratic process is appalling, and the administration's past connection to student issues is laughable at best. We'll see where this goes... I have my doubts that we'll see any improvement. But hope springs eternal, as they say.

3.What is the largest problem on campus?
The largest problem on campus is the lack of power students have. There are all kinds of "minor" problems (minor in that they should be easy to fix, not minor in that they don't matter) such as: poor quality cafeteria food, poor service in residence, not enough electrical outlets in class rooms, music students don't have enough stands, the library isn't open long enough, etc. . However, if students exercised power, we would see all of these problems evaporate: as it stands, not only is the administration not concerned with student issues, but even if they were the administration wouldn't be able to address these problems properly because they aren't students and therefore don't know what the "student experience" is.

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I will bring my analysis of campus power-relations, as well as a genuine interest in what students need, and connecting with students to find out what students need. I don't think any other candidate, bar maybe a few, has a similar focus.

5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
Well, if it was a meeting of the Committee to Find the Missing Elephant, I'd run back to the meeting room and tell them that our problem had been solved. If it wasn't, I'd ask the elephant politely to get out of my office.

Couple videos I've seen up

Dominic Villeneuve is on top of things, he's emailed me to let everyone know he has a new video posted on intellectual freedom:
English
Français

You too can have your things posted on this blog by emailing me at uoelection09@live.ca .

Michèle Lamarche (VP Student Affairs)

1. What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
My name is Michèle Lamarche and I am running for Vice-President of Student Affairs. The main focuses of my platform are support and resources for our clubs, services and students as well as ameliorating student life on campus in general.

2. Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
I am proud of the way that the UofO handled the bus strike. They organized shuttle service and offered downtown housing options to students. What great stories you could collect after living in Allan Rock's house for a few weeks!

3. What is the largest problem on campus?
For me, I consider student space a large problem. There is simply not enough room for the amount of students who attend the University of Ottawa. As the student population continues to grow, so should the space and the resources for the students. The students pay to be here and they should not feel as though they have no where to go or that they are in the way. This is an important topic for me and I look forward to working towards rectifying this problem.

4. What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
The three words that I have chosen to describe myself during my campaign answer this question: my initiative – my dedication – my experience.

5. And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?

I would send it back for a camel.

Meet and Greet!

Amalia, whose blog can be found over there--->, recently posted that :

Arts will be having a meet and greet with the Senate and BOA candidates on Monday Feb. 9th so that their students can get to know who they will be voting for. It's being held at Café Alt (in Simard) from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Oh hooray! I'm supposed to be in class/at work, but maybe I'll sneak over between the two.

Ted Horton (VP University Affairs)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
Ted Horton, Vice President of University Affairs.
I am running to improve the direct, day-to-day interests of all the students at the University of Ottawa.

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
They have an superb Sustainable Development department that is well staffed, well networked, and well informed.

3.What is the largest problem on campus?
The division of students from their Student Federation - the feeling that the SFUO is not relevant, or not representing your best interests. If this is rectified, we will be able to better organize, discuss, and ultimately improve upon all the other issues on campus.

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
Experience. The points that I include in my platform are issues I have worked on as a student. For food services, I coordinate a group that gives away free lunches on Wednesdays; for transit concerns, and I have been part of the fight for a U-Pass for two years; for student housing rights, and I have been organizing with the SFUO and the Landlord and Tenant Board a day of information sessions for students on housing issues and tenant rights. I've been working with these issues, and I know how to follow through on them next year.

5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
Start a fertilizer business? No, no - chariot. Big, huge chariot.

Ivy O (BOA SocSci)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
My name is Ivy O, and I am running for one of six seats as Faculty Director for the Faculty of Social Sciences on the Board of Administration. In terms of my platform, it is about being an honest and dependable voice for Social Science students.
2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
The UofO Administration did a great job of controlling the bus strike situation, providing shuttle service, and then even offering free housing, which also included Allan Rock opening up his home to two students. Amazing!
3.What is the largest problem on campus?
I will answer this from the students' perspective... The campus is divided, and we saw this after last semester's referendum. For there to be any progress, students from both sides (there may be more than two) must start working together to bring what the students (the ones who aren't from the usual circle of people involved in SFUO or campus activities) want and need.
4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
There are a number of candidates for the BOA who have worked toward a cause, or is an activist of some sort. I can't say that I'm an activist, but I can say that I am hard-working individual with strive and determination. I don't give up when it comes to fighting for issues that matter to me, and to the students that I will be representing if elected.
5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
I would think of an awesome name for him/her like Bart Simpson did when he won an elephant (he named his Stampy) from that radio station... KBBL (just wiki'ed it the name of the station...) and then show him/her off to all of my co-workers!

Ivy sent me her answers all in blue. I didn't touch anything!
I do like that she went and wiki'd KBBL, nice touch.

Robert Prazeres (BOA Arts)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
Robert Prazeres, Candidate for the Board of Administration - Arts Faculty.
I believe the SFUO must readjust its priorities so as to take into account the views of the general student population and to make communication with students a fundamental part of its strategy.
2. Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
The university did its utmost to take responsibility for the mass transportation of students during the transit strike, and that is something encouraging in a time of crisis.
3.What is the largest problem on campus?
Student space; it has become commonplace to see students sitting on the ground in hallways because there is no room to sit elsewhere. With the population of campus increasing every year, this problem is only going to get worse.
4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I am bringing, to borrow the most appropriate cliché, a new voice. My aim is to make sure the SFUO does not go off track by endorsing positions or undertaking campaigns that clearly do not represent the views of most students.
5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
I would offer it a job as my secretary; and subsequently exploit it for tax purposes.

Austin Menyasz (BOG)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could
you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
I'm Austin Menyasz and I'm running for the Student Governor seat on the administration's Board of Governors. My platform is simple: the university needs to invest in the classroom experience of its students, and, as Governor, I need to keep you informed through nifty online means (such as a blog and twitter) to ensure transparency and informational equality.

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
They offer a lot of services in a very accessible manner on-line, and have started to realize that the amount of paper they waste is probably not particularly friendly to the environment. Also, if it worked properly, the new WPA internet would be really useful...

3.What is the largest problem on campus?
Students are consistently being sold short with 'intensifying' (read:expanding) class sizes, and an inadequate number of full-time professors. It's about time we started getting real value in the classrooms for our money!

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?

I'm bringing a vision that the other candidates don't register. That the Board of Governors is our chance as students to tell the University of Ottawa that we will not sacrifice our education due to sloppy management, especially considering how much we pay.

5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
I'd invest in a really big shovel...

All election news!

If you're trying to follow multiple SFUO election blogs, including this one (is anyone really following this? If you are, leave a comment or something, not that I'll stop blogging one way or another. But feedback people! feedback!) then you might be interested to know that there is an easy way to do so, located here. (Also, I wanted to be able to experience a post on her twitter linking back to this post which links to her twitter and so on)Thanks to Maxime, who is also following this blog. Hooray!

Also, I'm gonna try and do a little exposé on those running for the SFUO exec. Rest assured, it won't be the same old stuff over again.

Did anyone else know Renaud has videos up?

They're pretty short, simple and to the point.

The Tristan-Julie encounter we saw at the debates apparently wasn't the end of the conflict. Nope. Tristan has started http://notojulieseguin.wordpress.com/ . Is this allowed? I have no clue. He's doing it though.

Who knows, this may be the most exciting thing to happen this campaign period.

Cam Gray (FOR BOA!) It rhymes, sue me.

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
My name is Cam Gray and I am running for the position of faculty director of the faculty of social sciences. My platform concerns an increase in the sustainability of our campus, our education system and our community to ensure current student enjoyment, without compromising such pleasures and enjoyment of students to come.
2. Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
They have began to commit to substantial sustainable upgrades to campus in both renovation and retrofit programs to allow for student enjoyment, while also taking the impact of any such project into account.
3.What is the largest problem on campus?
Currently, the largest problem on campus is a lack of proper communication. Although, we [students and administration alike] have many different methods of communication available at our disposal we do not use them effectively, which over the course of the year has caused the spreading of false information along with other negative messages regarding different aspects of student life. There needs to be a more transparent and open dialogue between students and their professors, but also between students and our student federation.
4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
As a BOA candidate I bring a different perspective than my colleagues as I am currently a Community Advisor in residence, which allows me to hear comments and concerns of not only my fellow students in classes, but also from the people that I live and work with in the residence life community. Additionally, I have been very involved in a variety of different aspects of student life from politics to clubs to intramurals to of course the residence life community.
5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
If I came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in my office I would probably ask him if he heard a who

Cam also asked very nicely if I would link you to his website. Why, yes. I will. Click the word website to visit. Either one.

Mike Fancie (Senate)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
Mike Fancie, University Senate.
Platform-in-a-sentence: What would a university be without students?

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
It's refrained from printing McDonald's coupons on the back of diplomas- so far.

3.What is the largest problem on campus?
Tuition Fees - by September, mine will have increased by fully $600 a
year since I started school!

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I am committed to working in the student interest, as I have been since
2006 (my life for three months last year was the Ottawa Drop Fees rally I
partially organized). I will be at the Senate to advocate for students on
issues from tuition fees to a better academic appeals process to
international students' rights - not to schmooze with Deans to get a
letter of recommendation.

5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
As if I had my own office...

Dominic Villeneuve (BOG)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
My name is Dominic Villeneuve, I am running for BoG to instill it with more transparency, "francophonie" and intellectual freedom.

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
Bilingual services, if only the government of Canada could do as well. This is a great place to learn and practice both our official languages. It makes us unique.

3.What is the largest problem on campus?
Facilities, I mean buildings. Each department seems to have its own standard. Some buildings are not even accessible. OK, Desmarais is pretty nice, but try a class in Séraphin-Marion and you will see the difference.

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I am a student in a public administration program looking forward to put the skills I am learning in the classroom into effect for the university community. I also have management experience and I know how to make a budget work. There are specific BoG issues that I really want to fix and as they say in Galaxy Quest, I "Never give up! Never surrender!" to find out more see my program at http://dominicvilleneuve.ca/program.htm

5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
Call my butcher, wow free elephant meat for a year! No more booooooring chartwells food! (OK Maybe too French for my English comrades) I should say: Call the zoo foundation and tell them I want to make a big donation!

(There are two interesting things about his answers. 1) is that he has a butcher, which is rare in this day and age. and 2) that he quoted galaxy quest to quote Churchill. -Ed.)

Jeremy Stuart (VP University Affairs)

1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
Jeremy Stuart, running for VP University Affairs. Platform in one sentence? Working to fix the problems of regular students and working to offer events that offer an education and experience beyond the textbook while making an honest and genuine effort to talk to students.

2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
I think Allan Rock is making a very sincere effort to talk to students and bridge the gap between students and administration to understand our concerns and I've been really impressed by him, as I think most students have.

3.What is the largest problem on campus?
I've been a student here for four years now, and I think the biggest problem is all the little problems. I keep saying it, but things like the internet not working, finding a place to sit and work that isn't crowded or loud, and making entrance scholarships easier to keep. If these little things could be fixed it would make the university experience here a lot better.

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I'll admit that I haven't been working in and around the SFUO for years, and some may see that as a weakness, but I think that most of the student politicians on campus forget what its like to take five classes and work a part time job. I'm really honest about the things I want because as a student I find the SFUO distant and disappointing, and after four years of disappointment I want the SFUO to be something students can be proud of.

5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
Ask the elephant how it got in without the key.

Alex Bevington (BOA Sci) (Senate)

Alexandre Bevington

1. What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?

Alexandre Bevington for BOA and SENATE for the Faculty of SCIENCE. Proper research, respectful debate and popular communication will result in concrete improvements concerning: the environment, campus accessibility, increasing tuition, discrimination and inclusivity on campus, student representation and participation.

2. Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.

The University is adapting very well to the incredible increase in undergraduate enrollment. Though it is not perfect, their efforts are obvious and appreciated. From study halls, to computer and wireless internet accessibility, couch lounges, new buildings, online technologies, and, and, and… but the work is far from finished!

3. What is the largest problem on campus?

Campus unity. Not it the ideological sense of “uOttawa is one campus that are together on all issues”, but there, that there is an information divide between those who have access to information, those who want access to information and those who have no idea or don’t care that that information is available. Information refers to free vegan buffet serving times (with the People’s Republic of Delicious), club participation, BOA meetings attendance, newspaper and radio participation, mentorship and help center utilization, and the list goes on!A unified campus would make: important issues (environ., tuition, accessibility…) easier to understand, businesses easier to mange, public opinion easier to assess, accessibility a no-brainer, students less divided between misunderstood debates, university life lively and fully functional.

4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?Too often to candidates represent extremes, social justice extremes, financially focused extremes, data oriented extremes or ideological extremes. With experience in social justice work (mostly through OPIRG and volunteering http://abevington.ca - BIO), having been enrolled in three faculties (science is my favorite!), having sat on many boards, being a musician and photographer, open and inclusive… I feel that I bring a calm blend to the urgency of social action and the timeliness of logical thinking.

5. And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?

If it was…

(1) Sitting in my chair: I would sit across from is and wait to be spoken to… (let’s face it, elephants are huge!) … then calmly try to get some information as to how the elephant got through the doorframe! And what the elephant wants, if anything!

(2) Asleep: I would probably go get a Polaroid camera, and call my little sister!

(3) Dancing: I would warn all the floors beneath the dancing elephant to evacuate!

(4) Chilling: Offer it some food and drink, I normally have an array of study food in my back pack, maybe even some peanuts!

(5) Floating: throw a glass of water in my own face, rub my eyes, then pinch my arm… is this real?

(I cut some of the formatting to save room-Ed.)

Debates and Peter Flynn (BOA SocSci)

Ok, so I missed the last little bit, sorry if anyone was following this so intently that you needed to know what happened. The last questions had to do with zombies, and hijacking emails according to Serge.

Anyway, I'm gonna start posting the candidate profiles that they've sent me so far. I was going to do it during the debate coverage but it was too busy and too hectic so they're all coming up ASAP.

Peter already got posted but it was buried in the election stuff so I'm gonna delete that one and post it here:
1.What is your name, what position are you running for, and could you please sum up your platform in one sentence?
Peter Flynn, Faculty Director for Social Sciences for the BOA
Platform: This is our campus, the students come first, let's make sure this happens.
2.Name one thing the University of Ottawa administration is doing right.
The University of Ottawa administration worked well with the SFUO to provide and advertise the extended shuttle service being offered during the bus strike.
3.What is the largest problem on campus?
The largest problem on campus is the lack of focus on real solutions to make the lives of University of Ottawa students better on a daily basis.
4.What can you bring to the SFUO/BOA/BOG that no other candidate can (aka why should someone vote for you)?
I'm a proven mediator who can bring people on both sides of debates to the table to agree. I'm dedicated to ensuring the accountability of the SFUO, dedicated to ensuring it fulfills its responsibility to the students.
5.And to steal a question from my co-op workbook: if you came back from a meeting and there was an elephant in your office, what would you do?
I would tame the elephant and provide free shuttle service from Tabaret to Site for all University of Ottawa students.

Presidential Debate Pt.2

There has been discussion of a clause requiring sound mind in order to run for a position. I've missed this and the current question being discussed. Sorry.

Furthermore, I have a discussion group at 2:30 so I will blog until I need to go. And then I will continue the blog-post debates, adding the questionnaires I receive from candidates so stay tuned for that.'
'
Question from Joël Larose: What referendum, if it passes, are you most excited about starting?
Tyler: Not really excited to give his opinions.
Seamus: Pretty much says the same, gotta go, DGD for me, Travis needs his computer.

Enjoy the rest of the debates.

Presidential Debate Part 1

Openings:
Marc Kelly: We need to understand that we are part of a hierarchy. We are subjected to different rights and freedoms. Thinks undergrads are not as well protected as graduate students. Is discussing how he was being subjected to political discrimination. Is discussing that professors have final word over what is on the syllabus. Wants students to be able to discuss learning in a democratic manner.

Renaud P Garner: He mentions that last year he ran, just to prove any student can be heard. This year he says he's in it to take the lead. He wants to improve things, says he respects a lot of the hard work of the previous executives. Dig at Seamus for not being at the code protest (I think that's the one) because he was in Louisiana instead. Brings up scalable scholarships again, says that money is there, he just needs to re-orient the money. Ethics committee was promised but never happened. Speaks of reason and diplomacy. Says "respect goes a long way."

Tyler Steeves: Discusses real things that want to be done for students: reciprocal relationship between students and the administration. Wants amalgamated calendar to detail everything on campus and to keep it up to date. Name drops winter challenge- "keep 101 week past 101 week." Says if elected students will definitely remember next year.

Seamus Wolfe: Steeves may have expertise, but Wolfe says he has the experience. Started centre for equity and human rights. Brought task force on campus racism to University of Ottawa. Wants campus united against racism. Speaks of success in getting shuttles running. Talks of code of conduct; says that it wasn't one protest that did it, it was a prolonged effort. Wants to improve community, transparency, student rights, good governance.

One thing you would accomplish next year?
Marc: Administration should be paper pushers, not decision makers. Wants to take over university so students are in control. Professors and students should be in charge.
Renaud: "I don't want a revolution" If he could get one thing done he says it would be a 24 hour library. Says it's about accessibility, access to resources, manner in which to study better. Says it's best for everyone.
Tyler : Promote university culture that he saw when he came to the U of O.
Seamus: "You can clap whenever you want, I don't care" Rebuts Tyler's claim that students don't have kids or a mortgage. Targets Renaud's claim about accessibility saying that he was against accessibility demonstrations. Says he wants to give every student a vote.

How do you see the role of the SFUO in the CFS?
Renaud: Wants SFUO to bring French to the CFS, wants workshops etc. in French as well. Wants to diversify the campaigns undertaken.
Tyler: Mic problems again!
Seamus: Wants the CFS campaigns to have real, concrete effects on our campus.
Marc: Doesn't really member if were part of CFS or not, we have problems here.

Where do you see the SFUO in 5 years?
Tyler: Wants to see people with passion running events, student initiatives from the ground up. Says SFUO is doing a good job, wants SFUO better integrated with the SFUO.
Seamus: Targets Tyler's accusations of Internation Development week being poorly SFUO supported. Says he wants all candidates for president in 5 years to not be white males.
Marc: "I will be here in 5 years because I found out you have 12 years to complete an undergraduate degree" Want students to control university in 5 years.
Renaud: Would like to see a lot of change... "as an alumni." Wants to build relationships with administration, wants to improve scholarships program. Microphone problems are reaching a new high... or low?

They're swapping microphones.

What is the largest defeat that the SFUO faced this year?
Seamus: The inability to defeat the $35 administrative fee for splitting payments. Says it is a tax on the poor. He has mixed up the french words for coffers and haircut. Dommage.
Marc: Wants students to just go to the BOG, there is too little student representation there.
Renaud: Wants a new start with Allan Rock, says relations affect everything from the fees mentioned by Seamus to international students.

My batter is dying, need to switch to borrowing Travis' laptop to continue typing. Public questions are opening.

BRB.

A Couple Things

Tyler Steeves suited up like Barney Stinson today.
As well, the phrase "Fuck shit up" is being thrown around too much.

Also, I can't remember the last time I spent so much time in a bar without drinking.

Presidential debate is happening!

1848 is hoppin

The title makes me sound like I'm 50 years old. It hasn't reached toonie tuesday levels but we'll see how it goes. Anyway, the presidential debate is coming up, they're all here!

Speaking of which, Kelly removed the safety vest. We'll see what happens.
Serge and Austin are taking lots of pictures. Maybe I'll steal some later. Or just link to them, that seems easier.

Marc Kelly Is Here

This is the most exciting thing all day. Well, maybe not, who knows.
According to Tristan protection is on the way.
He's wearing a bright safety vest which tells me that he's not planning on running. Or at least not effectively.

VP University Affairs

Opening:
Ted Horton: reduced tutition fees, bank of exams, etc. He has said that there are 4 good candidates; but that UofO needs a VP University Affairs with experience. I think he's going to try and say that he's the guy with that experience.

He's speaking about PRD right now, and now he's talking about organizing info sessions about students who are looking for leases. Says candidate "Equal in their interests but unequal in their experience."

Sydney Loko: Says most of us don't know him, is providing a brief history. Says foot patrol is a good way to communicate things to students (services etc.). He says he also has experience working with international house, and that most people there are Canadians looking to learn about other cultures. He is mentioning that he has started a West African association. He says that he can represent all students at the UofO.

Cameron Montgomery: Says that she has plenty of experience as president of student association, and as BOA member. She thinks that SFUO has students attention which is a pro, but that student-administration relations are not ideal, which is a con.

THE MICROPHONE IS CUTTING OUT! IT'S THE END TIMES!

She is also bringing up living conditions, and international students etc.

Moderated questions:
I missed the question
Ted Horton: Ted is talking about how issues such as racism are important. wants international students to have health insurance, he wants to represent students to the world and to the administration. wants to better daily life.

Sydney: According to Tristan: we need to understand the problem first before we can solve it. Or something like that

Cameron: Also is talking about dealing with issues of daily life. As well as bursaries, and the microphone is having issues again, and she is now discussing the issue of the student "ghetto" and poor living conditions.

Is there good enough representation at the BOG and Senate?
Sydney: He thinks that he thinks it's good that more people are interested in the campaign. He thinks federation is supposed to represent all students on campus, not only those who are most interested in issues/most involved.
Cameron Montgomery: Says that students too often don't show up to their spots on these boards. Says if students don't need to worry about paying for school etc., they will be able to concentrate more time to school politics.
Ted: We don't have enough representation. He says we need more seats on the BOG. Says SFUO needs better relationship with students to bring needs to admin etc.

A question at Cameron: How do you see the relationship between the SFUO and the University?
She says we need to address issues in a mature manner and it will be better respected.
Ted: We need to speak to the administration, if they don't listen then speak louder, and if they still don't listen we need to act. But dialogue and discussion are the essential aspects which first need to be covered.
Sydney: There is a problem with the current relationship. He says people need to respect the procedure.

What is the biggest academic issue facing students, how will you resolve it?
Ted: Lack of information, students don't know their rights. They don't know about appeals etc. He says students have rights and duties, but they don't know of them.
Sydney: Mentions that Student appeals centre published report condeming administration; he says that neither side really took the time to discuss the problems instead of being more confrontational.
Cameron: Microphone again. It's allergic to her or something. She says that there is due process, to change problems we need to be respectful. Says that students are here to learn and the University often seems to forget that.

Audience questions:
Based on past work by VP UA, what would you do differently?
Ted: Says that he sees large scale involvement as positive; but he also thinks that there should be more quiet diplomacy, quotes experience with UPass etc.
Sydney: Says he saw creation of Human Rights centre, says it's a good step. Says that most people don't know about it's existence as a problem.
Cameron: Thinks that enthousiasm toward this position was good, but that there was too much of a focus on campaigns and not enough on academics etc.

How are you going to get outside of the group of people who are regularly involved with the SFUO?
Syndey: You can only bring issues which are interesting to students; need diverse campaigns.
Cameron: Students who are involved don't neccesarily know how to reach out to other students. Talks as well about accessibility and bilingualism. She thinks online voting is good way to involve more students.
Ted: Says campus is a series of cliques, not just SFUO clique etc. Need to go beyond advertising on facebook/la rotonde/the fulcrum. Thinks there are many different groups.

I missed the question, they're speaking about the budget and surpluses

If the smoke free campus referendum passes what will you do to ensure it is successfully implemented?
Cameron: We'll need to work with the admin and protection. Mic problems again!
Ted: Need students to work towards it too.
Sydney: Needs admin employees to understand referendum, must convince them in order to have it successfully implemented.

There was another question but I've been caught up in other happenings around here.

Closing: Again, there are things going on, this debate has enough to read, I've been busy. Sorry.

Video Blog

Kyle who is running the video blog is currently sitting outside of 1848, my hypothesis is that he's trying to grab Tyler Steeves before anyone else gets a chance.

VP University Affairs is starting now. J-Stu as I will call him, is not here.

VP Communication

Julie Séguin is also debating herself.

Opening: Accesibility and technology and she talks quite quickly in French and typing and listening to anyone has been providing me enough problems. Sorry. More face to face contact apparently, wants the website updated more often.
English: Campaign committe open to students to reflect their values, wants to be able to provide clubs etc. with resources to communicate with students.

Moderated questions:
Does the SFUO currently engage students well enough?
Thinks that campaigns really help to bring students in to be involved. Wants more surveys to get feedback from students about residence etc.
Wants polls on website, talks about how info@sfuo email address was created in order to provide a general email for students to communicate with the federation. Talks about Get Involved campaign to get students involved sooner rather than later.

What are the most important tools for advertising?
Posters, but she says they've made fewer posters for events this year. She talks about making website more interactive. Facebook ads.

What happened to TV screen advertising project?
Project has changed, there was an outside company working on it but now they're trying to do it without ads. It's an ongoing process, can't be summed up in under a minute. She would like to make them available to clubs etc. She talks about selling ads on the screens back to the university, which I find amusing.

There was a French question here, I missed it talking about something else.

Audience questions:
I think she's talking about translation at BOA meetings, apparently it's really expensive. Again, I'm a little busy.

Ryan Kennery says he isn't running for anything: applause.
He asks when the student consultation promised by Julie will start.
-she mentions consultation on electoral reform as well as sustainability committee, as well as consultation on declaration on students rights amongst other things.

Question about if posters will ever be eliminated or VP communications roundtables will be opened to more people?
Discussion of 5 year plan of paperless campus. Discussion of events.sfuo page only, no posters. Says open roundtables is a "great idea", could open it to just general discussion.

Tristan has a list of things he wants Julie to talk about. She says she can't remember them all, and I know I certainly can't. I think he posted it at his blog which you can find on the side over there.->

There is a question as to why it took so long to get the SFUO calendar so long to get up and running.
Julie: They created their own calendar in order to fulfill their needs instead of using a pre-made calendar.

I missed the last part of this due to conversations occurring in my vicinity. Oops. So did Tristan, although he blames it on biting his nails.

Jeremy Stuart...

Has just sent me an email. He is running for VP University Affairs and has been unable to get the day off work. He would like to express that he does take the campaign seriously and that he regrets being unable to be present. There are 3 other candidates running, the debate will be posted here and I may give Jeremy the opportunity to post a short response. Do you agree? I'll let the people decide this one.

Pizza!

Has arrived, and as a result it has delayed Julie Séguin's opportunity to speak.

Vp Social

Firstly, Tristan Dénommée is blogging as well in french. Check it out.

Alexandre Chaput opening: Fewer events, but more promotion and more planning put into them. Wants to be able to discuss the successes and failures of events. Speaks of having uniquely French and uniquely English as well as continuing Bilingual events. Loves green, philanthropic, accessible events. Wants to improve large scale events, thinks winter games this year was step in right direction towards past glory of winter challenge.

Jean Guillame opening: Speaks of his experience as president of the Social Work students association. Wants events to speak to entire student body, not just one select part of it. He has raised a Carelton comparison, says that U of O has much more variety in events. Wants to bring back speaker's series. Agrees with Alexandre on philanthropic events. Wants to make sure people party, wants 1848 to be popular on weekends.

First questions:
What new element will you bring to 101 week?
Alex: Says he talked to Joël Larose and has discovered that they try to jam too much in, maybe lightening the schedule would work well to bring large numbers of people to events instead of having too many events with small groups of people. Would like people in 101 week to have a chance to sleep.Additionally, wants more accessibility, not just physical disabilities, he also speaks about people who aren't old enough to go to the bars, says movie nights don't cut it. (This last point is good, speaking as someone who was 17 during his 101 week).

Jean: Wants opening ceremonies to be more diverse, bring in bigger names to Fedstock. Open it to everyone and sell tickets. Thinks it's sad that people don't have idea that events are happening.
(I think we've had pretty big names in the past with Alexisonfire, K-os, it's not a bad start).

I was adding commentary to the previous questions so I've completely missed this question but
Jean said he would be an innovator. And Alexandre is pushing the fewer events mantra again.

How do dry social events fit into the SFUO's social calendar?
Jean: Not all events require drinking. Drinking is fun, but it's not a neccessitie. The word change has come up again.
Alex: Says that he's organized events before, dry events often turn out to be one of the best. He thinks he can use small, dry events to get people to meet new people, suggests paper airplane contest.

Audience questions
What specific thing would you do to make events more accessible?
Jean:wants translations in subtitles, and again I missed the rest of this.
Alex: Says he wants to work with others to ensure that events are accessibly, wants more barbecues during 101 week to deal with lineups (or at least I think that's what he said).

Apparently classes are starting earlier this year, meaning 101 week will be shorter. How will the candidates deal with this issue in their planning?
Alex:
Jean:

VP social should also include socially conscious events. Will you incorporate black history month into your role as VP social?
Jean: Shouldn't be limited to one month, should cover whole year. More conscious events throughout. Says he is on black history month committee so he is prepared to take on this challenge.
Alex: Says that it coincides with election period, awareness needs to be started earlier due to the fact that in Feb walls are covered in posters about elections, hard to get large turnout for black history month.

Do you think that opening up 101 week concert to more people would take away from the experience for the 101ers?
Jean: Thinks that 101ers can benefit from talking to others, why shouldn't other people be allowed to talk?
Alex: Says that it's never really been part of SFUO mandate to bring concert to other people by advertising off campus. He says he doesn't see need to change policy.

Big Bands vs. Local bands. Says that while they mentioned bringing bigger bands, there are lots of good local bands, might be cheaper.
Alex: Says concert this year was criticised for costing too much. Says that he thinks he would try for 2 big bands (one anglophone and one francophone) and then open the rest up to smaller bands.
Jean: Agrees on need for big names, but thinks that there are lots of good performers on campus as well. Wants to stick to a budget for the concert.

Question about shinerama fundraising policy of dressing in tight clothes and handing out condoms.
Jean: Wants to rethink shinerama methods, wants people to be able to know what it is. Thinks limits need to be on methods of how to raise money. Wants to expand philanthropic events to be more international.
Alex: Says question-poser has good point, thinks it's inappropriate. Wants to hold roundtables to convey message to all those involved. Wants to improve on trick or eat, maybe add a concert.

Closing statements:
Jean: Doesn't want to just keep all the things the same, again I missed a fair bit of this, it was only in French.
Alex: Emphasizes that he thinks winter games was good, but wants to increase it. Wants to increase participation and number of volunteers. Doesn't just want VP social running the show, wants to build ties between students. His address was only in English.

VP Student Affairs

Michèle has opened by speaking of all her experience on the SAFA. She wants to focus on clubs and student space. She also wants to make sure students at RGN are able to access resources that are available on main campus. She says she loves UofO even though she knows it's not perfect, she wants to make other people love the school as well.

Do you think most of the UofO students use the services?
She thinks that most students don't, and many students don't even know that they exist. She doesn't really mention how she would get more students to use them.

Audience question
what experience do you currently have with UofO services?
-Admits she doesn't have any experience with SFUO services but that she does have experience with other groups which she feels she could bring to the table.

There was a question in French about bilingualism? UESA? that I didn't quite catch but Michèle seemed caught a little off guard and a little perturbed.

You had a visible role in the CFS how will that affect your relations with them?
She says that we're members now and we need to move on. Make CFS work for us, there's no point waiting around for a referendum to try and quit. States her position was her opinion and that now she hasn't folded on her opinion but that she is able to get over that to get some work done.

How to keep individuality of services while maintaining values of organization/integrity?
States that interview process would be key for this role, making sure the applicant understands what the role is.

Questions about how to distribute resources and funding to clubs?
She says she would rather see rewarding clubs that work hardest on campus. She admits that the free for all idea is relevant since all clubs should be able to have access. Wants to explore club structures at other universities.

Between debates

They're putting up a jevaisvoter/iwillvote banner before Michèle Lamarche debates... herself on the topic of VP student affairs.

Audience questions

To Maureen: You're in 2nd year, is that enough experience?
Maureen: Says she has financial experience, she's up to job.
Roxanne: Finance requires a lot of administration and HR, says it's the most administration intensive job on the exec. She says that now that she has the experience, she thinks she is most capable of taking over. She thinks 2 years is a more realistic term for VP finance.

What fruit will you be?
Roxanne: Is avacado a fruit? Crowd says yes. She says she is hard on the outside, soft on the inside and she has a strong core.
Clever.
Maureen: Says she would also be a Tomato because it is the most contested fruit.

Closing statements:
Maureen: Says vote for her, is a vote for change. Wants include students in SFUO. Says she has the experience and that she is determined.
Roxanne: Says VP finance has a large role in influencing campus life. Roxanne brings up change as well, says she will do it through responsible management.

In the end:
Roxanne got a larger reaction, Maureen seemed less comfortable, especially in french, although I wouldn't say the debate was a blowout by any means.

VP Finance Question Period

There is talk about campus print:
It's in french so I'll avoid trying to get all this down. Roxanne points out that they have rush service and it's convenient for students.
Marueen: Says Merriam print is just on laurier, campus print must evolve if they want to be able to compete. Said something about 101 week, I didn't catch it.

Question about how to re-invest SFUO surplus:
Marueen: Scholarships and bursaries. Says she is in her 2nd year and already largely in debt, feels this is effective way to spend money. Ask students for input on surplus.
Roxanne: Says we need to speak carefully about budgeting a surplus. She says this year they budgeted for a surplus of $100 000, and by this point in the year it's already been largely used up. Can't assume that there will always be a surplus, brings up talk of economic downturn.

Question about 1848:
Roxanne: Food options more successful, finally broke even this year. Thinks that 1848 could reach out to more groups by expanding its program. Rebuts Maureen's desire to add a kitchen by stating that it would reduce capacity from ~140 to ~100.
Maureen: On the offensive about the kitchen. Targets Chartwells, other bars, wants to be able to compete. Wants to bring more student associations to 1848. Maureen

Does the SFUO pay its employees well?
Laughs break out in the room.
Maureen: She's cautious, basically takes line that she'd have to take a look at it, can't say much now.
Roxanne: Ok, I'll be honest, I just didn't follow this one at all. See if Serge got it.

VP Finance

Roxanne has started talking, she wants businesses self sufficient, wants businesses to be able to support green initiatives, wants to make SFUO businesses push past their current mandates. Says she is seeking re-election because while she feels she has accomplished a decent amount during her last term, she would like to continue her work/see it through for another term.

Maureen has started now: says VP finance is not a popular position, wants SFUO surplus to go back to students, wants budget posted online. Says that SFUO often pushes for lower tuition, but could use money to back this claim up by creating scholarships and bursaries. Wants agora moved on campus, and have larger kitchen in 1848. Wants human resource policy for SFUO positions.

Questions are beginning now.

Last update for tonight

OK, debates are tomorrow morning and I will fight against my own internal clock to wake up in time to be there, 10am at 1848 if Serge is right.

A couple other things:
1) I've just sent an email to a number of candidates with a list of a few short questions. I will post their responses online when I recieve them. If you are a candidate and did not recieve an email, it's because I couldn't find it. If I could leave comments on your website I probably left one for you. If you've recieved no communication from me, it's not from lack of trying.
Tip: add a "contact" tab to your website. Or, even better, just let www.iwillvote.ca know your email, then people can easily click on your name to contact you!
2) While hunting emails, I thought of a few things: I kind of think Cameron Gray(BOA SocSci) is running simply because the phrase Cam Gray for BOA rhymes. (I'm sure there are other reasons, why don't you go find out?)
3) CJ Symons (BOA SocSci) has a site although it's currently only available in English, which has Sylvia leaving comments. (Ok, 1 comment).
4) Serge beat me to posting that Dominic Villeneuve(BOG) has videos available on his site as well in English and French. I found this out about an hour ago while I was finding his email, but declined to post about it, now it looks like I'm copying Serge again. *sigh*

I'm going to complain about the lack of ease in finding emails for the duration of this campaign, or until everyone makes them easily accessible.

Ok, another quick update:

I'm not going to repost lists of all the candidates again, they're on www.iwillrun.ca/www.jevaisvoter.ca and Serge has posted a lot of the stuff on http://bloguefeuo.wordpress.com/, the headings are at the top of the page which are in french but most of them translate well if you can't read it (senat for example).

Serge mentioned today that some new campaign videos have been posted and that they're too long, see for yourself:
Seamus Wolfe (for president)
English
Français

Stuart (for VP University Affairs)

Again, a longer video. Not available in French yet and the site is still under construction, we'll come back to this later.

On the note of videos Tyler Steeves (for President) has posted one as well, only in English. It's short(er) and kind of humourous, but since I've watched it I've been trying to figure out what is up with his tie? Tyler?

If you're running and you have a video, send me a link. If you feel like my summary of how to find out who's running was inadequate, post a link as a comment.

But on that note, there are currently so many facebook groups/websites etc. It's a lot to take it so I'm hoping to make contact with candidates shortly and maybe try and wrap everything up in a neat little ball. Is that too ambitious? Probably, we'll see what happens.

Additionally, I've been curious about Marc Kelly's run for president. I'm not sure how to rank his standing, a) People at UOttawa know of him, but b) he has no posters up. Granted, there are many other variables to take into account here (including the fact that he isn't allowed on campus). What do you think?

So I'm a few days late

Starting what is sure to be minimal election coverage. However, www.iwillvote.ca has enticed me with offers of free ipods. That and I've been following the news fairly closely so far; Serge Miville has given me a convenient opportunity to practice my french while I procrastinate on assignments as I know we're all wont to do.

What I've seen so far:
Monday- desmarais lobby- Dominic Villeneuve (BOG) was with a friend of mine, I was on my way to work but he seemed like a nice enough guy. Seemed quiet though, which might not be the best for student representation on the already outnumbered board.

yesterday Feb. 3, Austin Menyasz (BOG), Aminka Belvitt (BOA SocSci) and Amy Hammett (BOA arts) in MNT203 @ 2:30.
Menyasz seemed most comfortable and most prepared. His platform seemed to appeal to students and he recieved a significant round of applause. The professor for the course nodded vigourously to his advocacy for better deals for part-time profs. He was concise and common sense (smaller classes etc.), not much rhetoric here.

Belvitt talked very quickly, trying perhaps to fit too many points into such a short presentation. Very enthousiatic although I had some trouble keeping track of all she was saying, main point seems to be that she is willing to listen to people who aren't part of SFUO 'in crowd'. Additionally, she was campaigning in what is primarily an arts class, might want to change audience.

I can't vote for Hammett so I won't lie, I didn't follow it all too much. Talked about student power etc.

Today: TBT 333
11:30- Peter Flynn (BOA SocSci) talked, he kept it brief which kept everyone happy. He was straightforward and generally accessible I think. He's also stopped updating his facebook status 20 times a day which is nice.
1pm- Comp. politics with Joseph Roman, Seamus Wolfe shows up right near the start of class but isn't allowed to speak. Unfortunate for such a large class.
2:30- My roomate keeps texting me about presentations she's seeing, says that I should admit Wolfe is "passionate" and says Peter Flynn is a "good speaker."

That's about it. I have too much stuff to do to follow these people around, this is what I've got. I'll post whatever tidbits show up. And no, I don't twitter.
